Canon globally announced the latest flagship mirrorless models, the EOS R5/R6 last night , it promised to provide a 8k 30p un-crop full-frame raw video and 20fps continues shooting, it also feature a second generation CMOS AF II system, to offer a world class AF performance, but how does it perform? Is it able to capture Sony market share?

Just 10 hours after Canon announcement, some opinions online already point out the camera might have over-heat issue, when shooting 8k movie , R5 can only opperate 20mins in normal temperature, it seem to be normal because such a huge file movie require a lot of processing power, especially the machine did not have a professional grade system to deal with over-heat issues, i.e. Still provide a role for C-300.

But on the positive side , I think the AF performance of EOS R5 and R6 can compete with Sony. This is the first time Canon can catch up with Sony in mirrorless camera.

Here are the proof from Canon , that’s see the movie:

From the movie, you can see the animal AF performance is much better than the first generation EOS R, and tracking performance is also quite response and impression.

Faster AF,Faster shooting speed and 0.4s faster start up will become the key feature of EOS R5 for success.

Up to this moment , Sony still have the largest market share for mirrorless camera, but the completion is become more complicated, the EOS R5 and R6 come very close to Sony AF and shooting speed, it also provide a better touch menu for basic touch operation, defeat one of the weakness link from Sony.

Moreover , Canon also implement IS system in the camera finally, the system can work with the IS system in the lens, and it provide all together 8 Stops IS performance, although it may be a marketing slogan, but I am sure that it can give you a 1/15s safe handheld shot for all situations.

But I think Canon still didn’t answer some of the questions.

  1. Did Canon decide to open the standard of RF mount just like Sony ?
So that we can have lens from third party lens maker , for example Tamron and Sigma.
  2. Did R5 and R6 got improvement when using adapter and EF lens? The original R is slow.
  3. This time we don’t see a EOS RP replacement.
  4. How about R1? is it a machine just like the EOS 1D X Mark III ?
  5. Still not many software feature and editing function inside the camera, but image.Canon cloud storage service is a a big step compare with Sony and Nikon.
  6. The R5 is still expensive and did not show a way to upgrade in the future. This is important, because nowadays , the product cycle for a digital camera is very short.
Faster Startup, support HDR PQ 10Bit HEIF and DP RAW is a step forward
